Learning to write numbers is mostly about where you start and which way you go. A child who starts a 5 at the bottom will fight it for years. So on every page here, each number has a small dot where the pencil starts, and the numbers with two strokes (like 4) show tiny 1 and 2 badges so the order is clear.
The pages go step by step: trace, trace and count, trace and color, number words, and finally writing the numbers with nothing to follow. Everything is black and white with thin lines to save ink, and every page comes in US Letter and A4 PDF.
Free Number Tracing Worksheets 1 to 20 (PDF)
Trace the numbers (1 to 20)

A solid model number with a start dot, then four dashed numbers to trace on handwriting lines.

The same layout for 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, with a start dot on every number.

Two-digit numbers 11 to 15. Kids trace both digits and keep them the same height.

Numbers 16 to 20 to trace, five times each on handwriting lines.
Big numbers, counting and coloring

One big number per box with start dots and tiny stroke-order numbers where a number has two strokes.

Count the pictures in each row, trace the number, then write it in the box.

Trace each number, then color exactly that many big pictures.

Trace the number, then color that many pictures. Larger counts sit on two lines.
Number words

Trace the words one to ten, then write each word on the line.

Trace eleven to twenty, then write each word on the line.
Order, missing numbers and writing on your own

All twenty numbers on one page, in order. A quick check of number recognition.

Eight number strips with empty boxes. Kids write the numbers that are missing.

Look at the small number and write it alone on the lines. No dashes to follow.
Which page should my child start with?
- Age 3 to 4: Big Number Tracing, Trace Numbers 1 to 5, then Trace and Color 1 to 5.
- Age 4 to 5: Trace Numbers 6 to 10, Count and Trace, then Trace and Color 6 to 10.
- Age 5 to 6: Numbers 11 to 20, Number Words, Missing Numbers and Copy the Numbers.
Why does number formation matter?
Numbers written in the wrong direction are easy to fix at age four and hard to fix at age seven. The dashed numbers on each page train the hand, the model number with its start dot shows the right path, and the last pages, with no dashes at all, check whether your child can write the numbers from memory.
Frequently asked questions
What age are these for?
Roughly ages 3 to 6. The 1 to 5 pages suit 3 and 4 year olds, and the 11 to 20, number word and missing number pages suit kindergarten.
Why do some numbers have a 1 and a 2 next to them?
Those are stroke-order badges. A number like 4 is written with two strokes, so the badges show which one to draw first.
Which size should I download?
US Letter if you’re in the US or Canada, A4 almost everywhere else. Print at 100% / actual size.
Are they free?
Yes, for home and classroom use. Please don’t sell or re-host the PDFs.
